You mean to say "it doesn't work with any 3rd party software that reinvents the wheel." Obviously, if a program doesn't use the native controls, updates to the native controls won't change how the program works. Complain to the software vendor.

You can use Google Calendar to achieve the calendar reminders. It can send you a text message at any time you want it to to remind you. A smartphone is not needed just for that. I agree with picking the provider first. That is the most important thing. After that, pick the device.
