i put a chain tensor on my bike.yesterday it came loose and now whenever i tighten it up it become loose and the chain falls off of it.This there a away to tighten it and it stayes tight.please help?

i had a 7 speed bike.and the gear shifter broke. So i made it a single speed and left the back seven gears sprocket on. But it on the 5 sprocket and its two hard to pedal. How do i put it on the 3 sprocket and the chain is tight now and don't know how to make it loose because there is a chain...
