    Why do evangelists give out pamphlets instead of cookies?

    Cookies would be more persuasive. The pamphlets I get try to evoke emotion but fail. I would better remember a cookie. @Lucas: a pamphlet can't save my soul either if it hits the trash before my heart. @Fireball: Cookies cause SALIvation.

    Is arguing pointless?

    Usually, but arguments are more persuasive than most other things (advertisements). Debates are just multiple people joining in on logical arguments. They help me.

    Why do so many Christians cite the 10 commandments as part of their core beliefs?

    They leave out so much from the old testament and accept this set of 10 rules. Why?
