Are you using a ligit copy of windows? I bought a Dell with Vista preloaded on it. When I tried to install SP1 I was locked out of my computer. I installed Ubuntu. I grow tired of MS's antics. If you have not tried Ubuntu I bet you will like it much better once you get the hand of it.
BTW...
Download partition software like Partition Wizard(download.com) and allocate all the free space to one partition. You should be able to resize the one existing partition.
