First try putting on the 4-way flashers, - if all the turn signals work, you know all these circuits work! Now some of these have separate TS and brakelight circuits, - some run through the TS switch! So of course you have to see which you have! I think it is not hard to get to inside of trunk...

My 95' did this when the shifting cable broke! Actually the cable was ok, but the end that hooks on shifting lever inside car broke, so the lever just flopped around! It happened a couple years earlier when the bushings on transmission end "went to pot", and I had too make nylon bushings to...

If this is the right transmission, - it could be somewhat true, -- but it is possible that linkages or something is not correctly adjusted also! Maybe you drove it so long with minor malfunction,--- that it does actually work different (when things work right)!!
