you can carry a alcohol stove, they are small portable and can boil water and cook food on the go. they run off denatured alcohol and work like little gas stove burners. they are easily made out two of soda cans. they are what i use when i go camping and hiking ;?)

it didnt take me that long to figure out gimp, its a realy awsome program you should try to use it ;?) but you can just use the package manager in ubuntu, and search for photo editor or paint and you should find something more simple
