The temp gauge on my 600 monster always spikes at idle, all the air-cooled Monsters will show numbers upwards of 250 on the gauge when idling in traffic. I can't remember if the '02's have the cooling fans? If not, that might be a good addition if you're doing a bunch of around-town riding.

See if your local dealer has demos - most do. I'd try both, but keep in mind that the 695 is pretty restricted from the factory - a set of slip-ons, chip and airbox mod will gain another 20% more ponies. I like the lighter weight and more 'fun' feel of the 695 - I'm never underpowered on my...
