the motor ran a little rough so i put new plugs in and new wires i go to start it and it cranks and cranks and cranks then backfires. is there any to set the timing without a light? could there be another reason why this is happening? its a 1986 power ram 250 with a 360, carb.

my truck is a 4x4. 4 speed manual transmission and it has auto locking hubs. I've put it in 4 Hi and 4 Lo and the back tires are the only ones getting power. is there a trick to getting them to work or do i have to get new hubs?
