    Why is my hard drive making a "whining" sound when it's not active?

    When my laptop's hard drive light is not on, the HDD makes a really weird noise (a sort of "whining beeping" sound). What could this mean? Does it indicate a defect in the HDD? My laptop is just over 1 year old, and is pretty fast, in good working condition.
