surrounding the lock on just the wheel is a very bad idea because theives can detach the wheel from the whole bike, leaving only the wheel tied up on the parking space.
1/2 inch sounds a little too thin. you might want something thats almost an inch thick. those plastic ones with a metal helix inside work great and are more flexible than chains.
