Does anybody know if it's possible to install an app you got from your computer then update/maintain it using the android market? It seems only market-downloaded apps can be updated... Has anybody found a way around this?

Does anybody know of a free android app that works like the default messenger except uses the internet to send messages back and fourth? Doesn't matter if the other person needs the same app for it to work. Really looking for anything faster then emailing.
