My walls are white and have minor damages, nail holes, one large hole, some scratches some drawings. Whats teh purpose of primer? and will my paint peel off when it dries if i dont use primer?

So I went to Home Depot, bought the paint and now I've gone home and started regretting the choice I made. I know I'm dumb, after i read the reviews of Glidden, I should've bought Behr... What I'm afraid of is that is Glidden paint brand good? Please give me your own experience of this brand...
