2000 Honda. The Low Gas Light indicator light used to work. Recently the car completely ran out of gas and the low gas light never came on. It seems like a rarely used bulb for it to burn out. What could be the problem?

I'm not the most mechanically inclined but have done most of the work on my Civic up till now. (Oil change, brake rotor/pads change, struts/springs change, valve cover change, etc.) But have never tackled a bigger job such as a timing belt change on my own.
