Hey. Why not use photoshop to create images for text and pictures, to enhance them etc and use these images in a desktop publishing software such as publisher. This would be much easier for you, and publisher has some good designs already set up. You could also contact a local printer and ask...

You could save it as a PNG file, this usually works when you want no background colour.
