It makes a small difference on voice quality. It also allows you to receive data while on a phone call.

So I can go get an AT&T contract,sign up for a data plan, then cancel it later? What if I cancel my AT&T contract, not just the data plan within 30 days, do I have to give the iPhone back?? If i cancel it after 30days and pay the ETF, I don't give the iPhone back right? Thanks
