SO FAR IT LOOKS LIKE NOBODY HAS AN ANSWER REGARDING FIREWALLS....I ALREADY HAVE A PREVIOUS THREAD GOING AND IT HAS BEEN VIEWED A BUNCH...BU NO REPLY..THE FAQ'S AND THE FIREWALL INFO HAVE NOT HELPED ME. THIS IS THE DEAL...AT ONE POINT AND TIME I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT AND IT SEEMED LIKE MY LISTENING PORT WAS 80 AT THE TIME And then corp. came and installed a new conn. and i wasn't able to connect anymore. i uninstalled and started over and then my listening port was 6346. i tried the force ip and it did not work. my ip address begins with 172 and i know that is a class b firewall....i am working on a g4 dual proc essor mac and i work at a newspaper if that means anything to any of you.pleas tell me if i ma wasting my time and if i should just give up on using gnutella??????

Apparently you're using an old version of LimeWire. You can try uninstalling it and reinstalling the current one (1.8b as of this writing). You can see your machine's IP address in the TCP/IP control panel. Not all IPs starting with 172 are private--only those whose second number is between 16 and 31. If you have such a private IP, use Force Local IP; otherwise don't. The Force Local IP address must be your public IP address. If you don't know it, go to http://www.dslreports.com/scan and the Java applet will tell you. You may also try Mactella; the current version (1.3.4) is quite decent.

All of the above assumes you're using OS9. Since client installations under OS X are far less controlled, it may require other considerations.
