We are losing our Kids to OXYCODONE!!

I know there are many families suffering because of the effects of this horrible drug. I am the mother of a son and step-son addicted to Oxycodone.

I don't think many of the users know how bad excessive use of Oxycodone can damage their body. Last week my son who just turned 23 had to have open heart surgery because of this drug. His excessive use of Oxycodone ate away at his aortic valve. Apparently many users choose to abuse this pill in various ways. bacteria getting in his system led to a staph infection. This infection went straight to his heart and damaged the valve beyond repair. Every time his heart valve would open and close it was sending the infection throughout the body. Not only was it found in his heart, but also in both kidneys, liver and spleen.

My son now has a mechanical aortic heart valve and will need to take medicine every day just to stay alive. He has a huge scar down the center of his chest to remind him everyday how bad this drug is.

My step-son spent his 21st birthday in jail because of this. The need to get the drug was so strong that he chose to start stealing from everyone to get money for it.

Far too many parents are either burying their kids or losing them to this awful drug.

Dear JR'smom,
I can sure understand your feelings about the problems that pill abuse cost you and your kin. Please remember that it isn't the gun that kills, it's the one who points it and pulls the trigger. That is the reason for gun control, to try and keep them from getting "abused" by folks. The drug Oxycodone has been a Godsend for so many with Chronic Pain when hardly anything else would help their quality of life. This drug was made for that purpose and several years ago when my back was broken, Oxycontin (time-released Oxycodone) was the only reason I was able to continue on until the healing was over, about 5 years worth. The trouble comes when others get this controlled substance and use it for other purposes, then find how quickly it can become habit-forming, especially if pain is not present. It's a double-edged sword, kind of, but it is a safe drug when used as it should be, it just doesn't always happen like that and then it gets a bad rap and people that need it can't hardly get it. I pray your kids are OK, you are justified in your concern, just remember: the Oxy did'nt pull the trigger. Take care, Jackbeanstalk

How about those of us in extreme pain who could not function without this Med.

I am not saying that it is the case with your kids, but I am sick of hearing people blame all of their problems on Oxy. Did the drug hold a gun to someone and tell them to shoot it into their veins? The blame lies squarely on those who didn't need the meds or abused them. And it is these kids that make it harder for those with legit pain to get relief.

jrsmom, while my heart does go out to you for what you and your children are having to go thru and deal with here, the bigger reason this even occured is 'addiction" and not 'the drug' itself? any narcotic or illegal drug can be abused, not 'just' oxy. you simply cannot deamonize a drug like soo many in the media also have for what IS addiction, period. it could have been heroin that did this very same type of damage to your child too, you know what i mean? i HAVE to use LA narcotics just to be able to actually move body parts from alot of injury/surgeries and a spinal cord injury as well. these ARE very helpful and needed drugs that do GOOD when taken for the right reasons and in the appropriate ways. it is what any given person 'chooses' to do with the drug that is the bigger problem. you DO have the option of 'choice' before any actual addiction simply begins. it is after that choice gets made, and the brain likes what it feels and the abilitys that most narcotics just have to help a person to dissassociate from (supposed to be the pain)life that gets that 'hold' on you becasue it is now "the new way to cope' with life that the addiction has you. once THAT occurs, that is when the individual simply needs to see the problem(usually when they hit 'bottom') and get help. or if minors, make the decision to get them help they need to deal with life without having to resort to 'coping with drugs".

unfortuently it sounds like both of your children seriously need to go into a good rehab program and find out what even LED to the addiction issues they are dealing with. thats the bigger picture here, the addiction which can be to many different meds or illegal drugs. the oxy just happened to be 'their' drug of choice. i DO hope they will be able to get into really good inpatient programs to help identify what the real underlying reasons are/were that even started this to begin with. trust me here when i say, there IS something that allowed them to even become addicted. since this does not occur with everyone who takes this stuff or simply wants to 'experiment" with it either? the experience was good for them and made them feel something that simply made them want to keep on doing this despite the problems it causes and everything else that comes along for the ride when you are simply trying to feed an active addiction? tho it is much more involved and in depth as far as what really allows addiction to occur at the brain level, that is kind of the basics.

but if there is ANY history in either side of the childrens familys of alcoholism or addiction, that just IS a set predisposistion in the childs brain that will make it much more 'likely' that they will/can become addicted than the average child/person would under the "right" conditions too. when dealing with our children and addiction, the rehab program HAS to involve the entire family in order for it to work in all the best ways. i do hope you update us on how things are going hon. and i really do feel for you as one mom to another who has also dealt with this hell too. i am hoping that your son is getting better and will be getting the help he needs to get back on track after all he went thru. this WAS his 'hitting bottom" and wake up call to simply see what this addiction has already cost him, and will get worse if this simply does not stop, now. sorry it had to happen that way at all. i wish your family the best of luck in dealing with all this. JRSMUM, It is very sad to hear that both your children have a drug problem, I only hope they get off it, sooner rather than later.
But a drug is a drug and addiction is addiction,if they have an addictive personality it would have been something else had it not been OXYCODONE. You can't expect the government to ban alcohol or just beer by itself because people are more likely to get addicted to one and not the other. Most people who drink do so without abusing it, so why should everyone else lose the right to drink ? Oxycodone is a great pain medication if used right and there are a lot of people that do not abuse it, so why should they go without because of people who have taken it for illegal purposes (to get high? ) It is the persons who CHOOSE to take drugs or alcohol responsibility not to abuse it, no one is forced to take and keep taking drugs, the young adults must be responsible for their own lives and what they do or unfortunately pay the consequences. Even as parents we cannot blame other people and things for our childrens choices, they are not babies forever. Lou:confused:
