I can literally feel the foods i eat going down my esophagus,I now have to chew my food into really small, small pieces,I also have upper abdominal pain 24/7.I can't eat rough foods like rice or toast, etc, any liquids but water are like fire, and the pain when swallowing is at it's worse when it reaches the bottom of my rib cage.Has anyone ever heard of anything like this? Thanks for any help.

it sounds like reflux....or problems caused in the esophagus by the stomach acid that's regurgitated.

You could possibly have a hiatal hernia.

You could have ulcers. There's a breath test for h. pylori...

have you at all been seen by an a gastroenterologist? If not, get referred to one so that you can have some tests done.

What you could do in the meantime is purchase over the counter Zantac and take it twice a day ... half an hour before eating in the morning and at night, about 12 hours between. If it helps, it's related to reflux.

It could be so many things but right off it sounds like you have a reflux with an ulcer with the burning.
You need to see a GI man and have an endoscope to check it out. They just put you to sleep and you feel nothing. I happen to be going to today to my GI man and know he will be doing an endo next visit.
H will be ableto tellyou after whats going on with the food and swallowing and the burning.
The endoscope is a tube with a camera on it and they look at everything on the way down to your stomach. No pain honest!!!

You've received some good advice so far. My Pulmonologist had me take a Modified Barium Swallow & Esophagram. The Modified Barium Swallow was done with a radiologist and speech therapist. It checked my chewing and swallowing process and they were able to see if acid was hitting my throat. They were also able to see if I was aspirating acid as well. I had that in combination with an Endoscopy, 24 hr pH and Manometry. You really should see a Gastroenterologist to see what is going on.

Thanks for all the replies,Ive taken the advice and am going to have an endoscopy, but they do put you to sleep right?Because it looks real painful.:(

They'll sedate you...either twilight or knocked out. Your choice I think. I've never had one, but for a colonoscopy, I prefer twilight and watching the monitor. It would be cool to see what's going in in an upper scope as well, but would be very odd sensation to have the scope down my throat.

Do a check online and see the options. You'll be able to discuss it with the doc of what you prefer anyway.

Keep us posted.

You shouldn't need pain meds for an endoscopy. I've had 2 upper and 1 lower endoscopies performed and I felt great when I woke. In fact, I actually stopped to eat after all of them because of the prior fasting I was really hungry. Probably the worst of the pain was when they inserted the needle for the IV. Aside from that, I really didn't think it was much of a big deal. They have you in and out fairly quickly. They do require you to have someone to drive you home as a precaution, but I never felt any after effects.

Good luck.
