Rider Down

I work in surgery here FL at a small town hospital. I work in open heart but a trauma came in early from a motorcycle accident. I've been in the OR ten years and not seen something like this. This young man, had so many reasons not to ride but today may be his last. He looks like he low sided on the left and tried to catch himself doing over 70mph. He was wearing NO protective gear, under the influence of alcohol , speeding and it was raining this morning.
I would post pics but for patient privacy and sheer sight of his injuries you can only imagine. Like I said, I work in open heart and this almost made me sick. His scalp is open, jaw lacerated and almost removed. Left arm to elbow shattered and bones exposed, fingers missing and barely attached. Degloved his thigh to just below the knee removing all tissue to the bones. He is right now in stage 3 volemic shock.
I am taking a coffee break and had to share this. Seeing this reminds me why I never think twice about using all my gear and never riding with any alcohol. Take a moment and remember what can happen. Safe riding!

Man, I never wish anthing like that on anyone. It really is too bad for that guy but I hope others read this and learn from this poor guy's experience.

Sometimes I look up MC accidents on the net just to remind me that anything can happen at anytime and even though you think you're in control, something can always happen and ruin your life or others for that fact. Kind of brings you back to reality.

Here in Florida without a helmet law I can count on one hand the number of times I wore a helmet while riding.

After reading the many discussions about gear and personal accounts of wrecks on this site (as well as some of YouTube's greatest hits) I vowed to always gear up no matter how short the ride.

Who knows maybe one day you guys here on Ducatispot may have saved my life (hopefully not too soon). I thank you all for sharing.

I make it a rule to never drink any alcohol when I ride, always wear Race Alpinestar Gear (Boots, Gloves, and Jacket), and I didn't even flinch at the 900 dollar price tag of my Arai Corsair Helmet. Life is too short to make it shorter! I think it is really interesting to see an OR rider. I have a friend who does ER and he swears up and down he'll never ride a motorcycle.

I have a another friend who taught me how to ride street bikes and he contributes to my safety by sending me occasional photos and video of horrible reminders to ride safe and wear safety gear.

It's not like we have roll cages or airbags... our gear and our brains are all that protect us, so they should never be compremised.

All the gear, all the time! Period. No exceptions. Anybody who's making excuses or exceptions, ("It's too hot, I'm only going for a short ride, We all have to die sometime, When it's your time, it's your time, blah, blah, blah..."), is asking for trouble.

If it's so hot I can't stand to wear full leathers, then I don't ride. It's that simple.

I am sorry to hear a story like this one as well. We all understand your need to vent since you have a stressful career.

I can't tell you how many times I gear from head to toe just to travel 2 miles in order to fuel up my Ducati, and people look at me like I am an idiot. Accountability requires a high standard and A T G A T T is the highest form of safety available to all of us.

Besides wearing protective gears and armor, I tend to wear the most colorful one. So what if I look like a clown. As long as that lady talking on her cellphone or that moron eating a bigmac while driving can see me for miles, I don't really give a s***t.

I work in a OR too here in North Carolina. I have seen some pretty bad stuff, but I don't think I would want to see that. My protective gear actually saved me from wearing a new face already. Have to have the stuff on!
