Track Bike... Opinions

i've tracked my Ducati, and raced a gsxr 600...

for me, there were big differences in the feelings involved..no matter how much i enjoyed tracking the Duc.. there was always a small voice in the back of my head.. "careful.. don't crash her!"..

i did enjoy tracking the Duc, but after trying the 600 on the track, i had so much more fun.. i could care less if i threw the gsxr down.. it was cheap to buy.. cheap to fix ( molded and replaced the body-work myself ).. and ended up racing it..

ask yourself.. ya gonna hear that little voice?.. my friends don't.. and i've ridden their trackbikes.. the 999 was a lot of fun.. but i wouldn't be able to afford to fix it for a track bike..

i think for track days Ducati's are fine.. but for racing the motors don't seem like they take the abuse as well... and they are much more expensive to fix..

you won't know the answer until you are on a track with yer 848... the first time you almost loose the rear you'll know... you'll either smile and want more... or you'll immediately be worried about your shinny Duc.. and what "almost" just happened to her..

that said, Ducati sport-bikes are made to be tracked.. and yer bike will love you for it... my $.02 is if you feel the addiction.. cure the addiction with a jap. bike.. cure the craving with your 848..

Now, would it not be the case that riding on a track, where we find no painted lines, no transmission leaks puddled up at redlights, no coppers, no high school chicks commanding Honda civics while texting, putting on makeup and talking on the cell phone, leaves or sticks on the road and little if any yard dogs running to and fro and chasing us make for a FAR safer place to ride than on the average road running through (insert town name here)?

When at the track I feel way safer than I do riding my scoot to the office, hell, its a gauntlet just riding down the highway at 0730hrs in the morning around here and I am in a smallish AL town. Ed Bargy taught me that while at the track, you and your bike are far safer than on public roadways.

The 848 or 1098 are the embodyment of a track bike and the only thing that'll make one better than the other is you. Get the one you like and ride your bike, fixing it when some old lady knocks it over at Wal Mart is more likely expense than if you ride within your limits at the track!

Yup! Love my 999 as a track bike too. But...if cost is the thing, you'd be fine with some Jap stuff. The Gixxer 750 is a lot of bike for the buck and you can trick it out at least as much as you can a Duc.
