Stolen after UPS delivery

This is irritating.

My trackwheel didn't function so I ordered for the replacement under warranty by email while on vacation. I knew the exchange procedure. Recently UPS delivered it to my door in late afternoon, but my roommate found its package empty four hours later.

I found out all this next day (returning from vacation). I contacted T-Mobile and was told to file a police report before their next step. They suggested me to buy insurance and pay a deduction if it's my last resort. Didn't realize UPS only covers any damage or loss during delivery, not theft. My complaint was that no tracking number was provided and it should require a signature based on its value. I might be charged $400 if I don't send back my Blackberry this month. My contract with Tmo has one year remaining.

Have you experienced this before? I have a police report but haven't called Tmo again yet. I'd use an old handheld from my friend. I'm looking for better options.

I used to work for ups. They are supposed to deliver packages to persons, not just leave them at the door. Someone had to sign for the package or else they would have left a notice of attempted delivery. If no one signed it, they (UPS) are responsible. If someone signed for it, the signer is responsible as they should not have left a valuable package outside.

Sounds like whoever stole the phone may have been posing as you and signed for it before stealing the phone.

I am going to threadjack this for a second... UPS has never asked for a signature when they deliver stuff to my house. They just leave it there. So if I were the OP of this thread, I would so be going after UPS for this.

Don't know about you but have to sign for everything I get from ups and I refuse if some of my boxes are damaged

Most of the time, I got UPS deliveries without signature at my former residence. I thought it was usual but I'd expect a required signature for valuable packages. In fact, I had two Sidekick exchanges thru UPS without a signature in the past.

Correction: T-Mobile did provide a tracking number by reference earlier. I never knew what it was till too late.

I'd complain that UPS is liable in this for making a valuable delivery without signature.

Everything through UPS in my area requires a signature, so they have to hand it directly to you. They even ask your name to make sure you are the person or related to the person the package is for. So yeah I would think UPS is at fault here for just leaving the package.

I am only asked to sign if I am home, meaning they never leave a "we missed you" slip. They just leave $500 packages at my door. I guess it depends on the driver or region. I have luckily never had anything missing, but if I did I would certainly make UPS pay for a new one.

I have never had to sign for any of the replacement phones that I receieved and I have had I know 3 of those left on the porch. I agree you need to contact ups and see if there was a signature if it wasnt I would go after them

If you live in a house and the local ups guy knows you by name etc he wont bother with signatures.
I used to recieve 3-5 packages a week and if i wasnt home UPS just left them in the garbage can.
but ultimately UPS is responsible for the package untill you sign off.

I agree with everyone who said they don't have to sign for anything delivered by UPS. I have had several replacement units (BB's and 2 SK's like Teuton said) waiting for me at my doorstep if I happened to be away when they are delivered. I have never had to sign for them.

EDIT: I have a BBMessenger buddy that I talk to regularly that works for T-Mo. If he replies to my message, he may be able to help with the situation about returning the phone (you have 7 days to get it back to them). Hopefully this will work out.

Sounds like a UPS conspiracy a brewing. I know drivers have a certain time limit to deliver all their packages in a day and if it looks like they are behind, it can cause them not taking a lunch break to catch up. When no one is home, it eats up time to do the attempted delivery slips and they don't go home untill all packages are delivered or attempted.

Yeah, definately contact UPS about this

Back with an update for Teuton. After talking to the rep I have on BB Messenger, the only thing he said is to go ahead and send back the broken 8700g to avoid the $375 charge but you will probably be without a phone for a few days until you can get a new 8700g. I'd be on the phone with UPS first thing tomorrow morning to find out what happened to that phone.

I had a similar incident with a 7100t 2 years ago but it wasn't stolen. It was an address miscommunication between T-Mobile and UPS (even after I had given them the correct address TWICE) and T-Mobile didn't notify me that it had been delivered to the wrong address. I had to call them and get a THIRD 7100t. The second one was found and delivered 4 months late.
