ReCasting Roles - Yay? Nay?

To be honest, I'm a little miffed they're re-casting Peter Parker seeing as Tobey Maguire is so recent and was so successful. But I hope they get it right. Peter Parker is a great big screen character but casting is everything. He has to be a little gangly but still believable as Spider Man, a comic book action hero superstar.

^ I'd rather just have the role/character written off altogether than have the role recast, personally. As lame as it is to have writers put in a little dialogue regarding a character's off-screen departure, having a different face for the same role just seems lamer to me.

This is exactly it for me. I hate it, because even though the new actor might be better suited for the role or a better actor in general (I liked Maggie as Rachel in The Dark Night, better than Katie at least) but despite that, it feels wrong. Probably because I started associating a different person with the role. It's just hard to have to remind myself that this new face is supposed to be the same character. Overall, I'd say I'm not a fan of recasting, even if it might lead to a better fitting actor. I'd rather the role get recast than the movie not made, but if there's anything at all they can do to prevent it, it should be done.

I think it depends on the movie. because if its a series then it can seriously damage the movie. but sometimes the movies are so independent from each other that you just dont mind as long as the performance is good

LittleMilkJug great point. In that case, different actors over the years bring out different layers and characteristics.

You're right, that is an awful rumor. :( Hope it stays just a rumor!

When it's for a role like James Bond then I'm all for it and if the actor dies and his character is pivotal to a film series like Richard Harris/Dumbledore then I'm OK with that too.

I pretty much agree with BabyJ. If I like the actor/actress in a role, then it's more than likely that I'll get attached to them as that character, so it'd be very hard for me to have to get used to a completely different person in the same role. Even if it's someone I'm not particularly a fan of, I wouldn't like to see their character recast. Because the original person has made the character their own, with their own little nuances or quirks, they've sold the performance the best way they can, so to see someone else come into it and try play the same person is just awkward and annoying. It bugs me!

Not a fan at all. I'd rather they kill off the character instead of recasting actually.

Nah I aint a fan

 Your post is great! Hee.

I agree that casting changes can be so awkward. I thought MJ was going to get killed in Spider-Man 3 and I was sad. But Kirsten isn't as good as she used to be, at least imo.

I'd rather the producers just off MJ, actually. :P

I'm not a fan of recasting roles in general. I just find it really awkward when there's a new actor for the same character. Something's just off. I feel the on-screen chemistry gets compromised (but I'm not really sure how else to put it). :look:

Plus, I tend to get attached to a certain actor in a certain role, so when that role's recast, I just get annoyed. I think that may have to do with first movies in general though. When a movie is made and specific actors are cast in their respective roles, the actors simply become their characters. They embody everything the characters are and bring them to life on the screen for us. Especially since I don't have any previous examples to compare them against, so I guess I'm more accepting of these actors as these characters? :look:

Basically, I love Batman, and I love The Dark Knight, but I wasn't too fond of the changeover to Maggie from Katie. And I enjoy Iron Man, and Terrence Howard was just perfect in that role for me. As amazing as Don Cheadle is, mehhhhhh. :look:

I hope this post makes sense. Coming off a cold, I'm operating on about four hours of sleep right now after an entire day of classes. So it may not.

I'm usually against it for continuity purposes, but I guess there are cases where I've approved.

This post by J.R. in the Iron Man thread gave me the idea for this thread:

I wasn't a fan of the recasting of Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight, I actually liked Katie Holmes in Batman Begins and the recasting changed the dynamic of the character for me.

So, what have been your favorite/least favorite recastings?
