Existing cables okay for satellite?

I am interested in switching to expressvu from rogers but this would depend on whether the installed cables in my house would be useable for satellite connection as I don't want to see ugly cable wires run through my family room and basement. Is this doable?

Thanks.

What cable do you have installed? See if you can find any labeling on it. Satellite works best with RG6.

See the following previous thread on the topic.

The satellite installers are not really allowed to use existing cables since this could cause problems if you decide to use Satellite and Cable, or if you keep cable internet and there is a screwup, etc.

Can it be done - yes. Should it be done - probably not due to the issues that can result - that's why BEV installers are instructed not to.

If you are intending to get a Free Pro installation then the Technician SHOULD replace all cables.

Failure to do so, even if you insist on him using existing cables will put him in a very awkward position, should there be a problem within 90 days.

And service calls generated within that 90 day window will result in the original Technician having the cost of that Service Call clawed back from his earnings.

If you were thinking of a self installation, go ahead use the existing cables, if there is an issue after-wards, then there is a 95% chance you will still get a free Service Call and no-one can have anything clawed back, although Express Vu will still deduct the cost of the Service Call from the Installation Company until it is proved that they did not do the installation.

Alternatively, you can do what I did in my house - I run two RG-6 cables from the dish outside, to the basement. One feed goes to a 3100 which is the main TV in the basement rec room. The other feed goes to a 4700 receiver (with the wireless UHF remote) in my laundry room, right where the cable tv once came into the house.

Then I feed the output of the 4700 receiver to the splitter that feeds all the cable outlets in the house. Now I can watch ExpressVu on any TV upstairs in my home, I just need to have the remote with me to change channels. Where everything is finished, this was much better than running new RG-6 cables since the output of a receiver works just fine with RG-59.

You can do the same thing with any receiver that uses UHF remotes.
