Newbie here, sorry if this topic has been covered.

Noticed that some shows that I have set as a recurring timer, now end one minute late causing a timer conflict if I have another show scheduled next.

I know you can create a manual timer and have it stop recording one minute earlier. As far as I can see, you can't do this on a scheduled event.

Whty is this happening and how can it be fixed?

It all comes down to money. The earlier, 61 minute show has higher ad rates, so they stick in a couple of extra commercials making it run a bit longer. The next show only gets 59 minutes. Nothing you can do about it. At least they let us know now. Before they never told us in advance, and the PVR's would keep cutting off the last minute of the show.

If you do, you will miss the ending of all those shows, but yes, that is the only way I am aware of to end a program early.

Is it the show itself that runs 1 min late? I know some do like CSI on Thurs night ran 1 min longer and ER which followed on CTV was slated to start at 10:01pm.

Or is it that your timer is set to end 1 min late. When you set a timer you have the option to end late and start early. You can change your time option to 0 for the end late for that specific timer or you can go in and set the defaults but you'll have to redo all of your timers i believe. Usually when i'm recording back to back on the same channel i don't bother to play with the end late or start early options because they generally will overlap ok but when they're on different channels back to back then i'll change the end late to 0 and the start early to 0 just to make sure that they end ok and start ok but sometimes you end up with a bit of cut off.

I have run into this problem many times and I now use only manual timers due to other glitches in the software.

What I do if I have two programs back to back on different channels is that I end the first program on the manual timer when it is scheduled to end -- ie. if it ends one or two minutes after the start of the next hour I program the manual timer to end one or two minutes after the start of the next hour.

I then program the second manual timer to start the next hour one or two minutes late.

The reason this almost always works is that programs rarely do anything substantive in the first minute or two -- it is generally catchup review of what happened in the previous episode. Even if this is not so, the scripts often allow you to understand what you missed as the program proceeds.

I know once in awhile you miss a key clue in the first minute or two, but I find this hardly ever happens and I'd rather miss a portion of the beginning of a program than the ending of the other program.

Finally, for programs you watch regularly, experience allows you to decide how much of the end of a program is commercials and previews and how much is actual content. You can adjust your manual timers accordingly.

When I run into these situations, I change one of the timers to pick up the west coast feed 3 hours later (assuming it's a channel with multiple timezones).

With a dual tuner PVR and east coast/west coast time shifting, it really isn't something that I have to worry about these days.

I wish you could change the time settings of scheduled events. For example, I want to record only the first 20 minutes of Craig Ferguson ... if I schedule it, I can't change the end time of the recording. So then I have to do a manual timer, but it's a PITA because his show is on Tuesdays to Saturdays.
