...photographs were public domain? I'm trying to find out what years works of photography belonged to public domain? What is the year that photographic works began being protected by copyright law? If, for example, it is 1950 - can you use any photograph pre-1950 without royalty or legal ramifications?
 
If you wish to use any photo (not of your own) for a 'profitable gain', I'd consult a lawyer.
There are family trusts that protect a great many photos.
